John Boys (bishop)
John Boys (1897–1965) was the fourth Bishop of Kimberley and Kuruman from 1951 until 1960.〔The Times, Tuesday, Aug 16, 1960; pg. 10; Issue 54851; col D ''Bishop Of Kimberley's New Post In London''〕 He was educated at St Olave's Grammar School and Hatfield College, Durham 〔“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 and, after a business career, ordained in 1935. His first post was as a curate in Egham Hythe after which he was appointed the Bishop of Gibraltar’s personal chaplain.〔The Times, Monday, Feb 13, 1937; pg. 18; Issue 47788; col G ''The Bishop of Gibraltar has appointed the Rev John Boys to be his personal chaplain''〕 From there he went to South Africa (where he continued his career as a missionary〔The Times, Monday, Aug 15, 1938; pg. 13; Issue 48073; col C ''The Rev John Boys formerly Chaplain to the Bishop of Gibraltar has been appointed a missionary in the Diocese of Lebombo''〕). He later became Archdeacon of Lebombo, and in 1948 Bishop. Translated to Kimberley and Kuruman in 1951 he served the Diocese with distinction until ill health forced him to resign nine years later. In retirement he lived in London and was an Honorary Assistant Bishop within the Diocese of Southwark.〔Who’s Who (ibid)〕
