His first post was as a curate in Egham Hythe after which he was appointed the Bishop of Gibraltar’s personal chaplain.〔The Times, Monday, Feb 13, 1937; pg. 18; Issue 47788; col G ''The Bishop of Gibraltar has appointed the Rev John Boys to be his personal chaplain''〕 From there he went to South Africa (where he continued his career as a missionary〔The Times, Monday, Aug 15, 1938; pg. 13; Issue 48073; col C ''The Rev John Boys formerly Chaplain to the Bishop of Gibraltar has been appointed a missionary in the Diocese of Lebombo''〕). He later became Archdeacon of Lebombo, and in 1948 Bishop. Translated to Kimberley and Kuruman in 1951 he served the Diocese with distinction until ill health forced him to resign nine years later.
